Medgidia City is located in South-East Romania, in the middle of Dobrodjia Region, 200 km East from Bucharest, 39 km West from Constanta and 90 km North of Bulgaria. Distance from the Black Sea is 39 km, and to the Danube River it is 25 km. It is the part of Romania occupied by many Turkish and Tatar people. The headquarters of the Muslim party, the Muslim Theological Seminary of Romania and many institutions of the Muslims are situated in the town of Medgidia (whose name is also derived from the name of a Turkish Sultan - Al-Medgid).

Because of the economical situation of the entire country, but mostly because of the bankruptcy of two gigantic factories built by Ceausescu in Medgidia, the town has one of the highest unemployment rates in the entire country. For example, just two of the 75 members who attend BETHLEHEM CHURCH are employed! It is a tough fight for survival for to all the inhabitants. Sadly, people try to find refuge in the alcohol, prostitution, crime and the situation worsens.

In the vicinity of the new Hands For Humanity Community Centre, the place where the church meets there are a number of homes that are occupied by very poor people. Their children do not attend school, even though some of them are almost 15! They live in very small cottages, many families in just one room, without electricity. Their children have nothing to do but to waste their time on the streets and learning how to steal and preparing for a terrible life. 

The Vision
MEDGIDIA BETHLEHEM CHURCH has started to reach to this community last year. After a street campaign many of the kids have started to visit the church and now there are many who come regularly to the Sunday School. Some of the members of the church had the desire to help these kids to learn how to read and write. We started small, and after just one week we have found that there is a great interest for education among these children. Classes started in the last week of November and now there are 16 children who attend the classes. Even their parents who do not know how to read and write are seeing this as a great opportunity for their children and as a result some of them have started to attend church. There is hope for this town, but it’s only God who can change these people! 

The Method

Two ladies from the church who have a degree in Theology and Education are running the school. The school operates 4 hours a day, five day a week, plus a special service on Sundays. The school will provide a meal a day, teaching from a Christian prospective and will build the lives of the children for the future. 

The Need

So far we were not been able to invest more than…$ 20! We have not been able to provide the meals we intended to offer, the children did not receive any books or notebooks to take home, yet they are so enthusiastic about the school! If we are to capture their attention for the whole year we need to make an investment in this school that will allow us to meet the needs of the students. The estimated cost to run the school for one year is $ 3,500.USD.
